RuthTURNERIt is with deep sadness that we announce that Ruth Turner passed away peacefully, aged 94 years at Wellfield Home for the Elderly on Thursday, April 11, with family by her side. Dearly loved wife of the late William (Bill) Turner, devoted mother of Lois,
mother-in-law to Vincent, treasured sister of Olive, Glenys and the late Norman (Norrie), sister-in-law of Cathy, the late Alma and the late Harry. Ruth was also a dear aunt, relative and friend to many. The eldest child of Richard and Isabella Grimshaw, Ruth was born and raised in Haslingden. Her early working life was spent in various local mills before later becoming a ledger clerk at the General Municipal Workers Union office in Accrington, from where she retired. Following her marriage to Bill in 1952, they lived in Haslingden before later moving to live in Baxenden, then Accrington. Formerly of Bamford Crescent, Ruth was known as being a sociable, fun and witty lady, who was always nicely and smartly dressed. Previously she enjoyed travel, reading, films, dress-making, and being a member of Rossendale Ladies Choir. Ruth was very proud and supportive of Bill as a local historian and author. Following his death in 2007, she greatly appreciated the work done by the late Walter Holmes, and others, to continue Bill’s work on ‘The Accrington Pals.’ Ruth also represented Bill on a number of projects which promoted The Pals’ story. The family wish to thank the staff, and residents of Wellfield Home for the Elderly for the care, affection and friendship shown to Ruth. The funeral will take place at Accrington Crematorium on Wednesday, May 1 at 1pm. Family and friends are invited to join together and wear bright colours to celebrate Ruth’s life. Family flowers only, please. Donations, if desired, can be made to the UK baby charity, Tommy’s. Enquiries to Johnson Durning & Woods Funeral Service 01706 214498.
