As we mark World Mental Health Day 2023, the theme ‘Mental health is a universal right’ resonates profoundly in a world where access to mental health care remains a challenge for many. This year’s theme underscores the importance of recognising mental health as a basic human right, equal to physical health.

World Mental Health Day 2023 takes place on 10th October, and aims to raise awareness and drive positive change for everyone. It provides an opportunity to talk about mental health, how we can look after it, and the importance of getting help if you are struggling.

How can I get involved with World Mental Health Day 2023?

Host a Tea & Talk
Research shows that speaking up is good for your mental health. Tea & Talk allows family, friends or colleagues to come together to raise money and awareness for the mental health foundation. Resources and help planning your event, including quizzes and games, can be found at the following link:

Raise Awareness
Use social media platforms, a personal blog or website, or word of mouth to raise awareness about World Mental Health Day. Images for social media can be downloaded from the mentalhealth.org.uk site, as well as posters that can be printed out and pinned to the walls of your workplace. Wearing a green ribbon pin, available from the above site, can also help to raise awareness.

Share Your Experiences
World Mental Health Day is all about lifting the taboo surrounding mental health, helping people to realise they can talk about their issues. Share your experiences with others, and encourage them to talk about theirs (if they are comfortable doing so).

Offer Support
Offer your support to anyone who might be struggling. Ask them how you can help, whether it’s as a listening ear, or to help with errands like cooking and cleaning. Let them know you’re there for them, if needed.

Donate
Donating or volunteering with mental health organisations that are actively working to promote mental health rights and provide services to those in need can make a significant difference.

Self-care
Take care of your own mental health. Reflect on your own well-being, practice self-care, and seek help if needed. By taking care of yourself, you set a positive example for others.

World Mental Health Day acts as a reminder that mental health is a fundamental aspect of our well-being. Even small actions can have a significant impact when it comes to mental health advocacy. Every effort to raise awareness and promote mental well-being contributes to the broader goal of creating a world where mental health is recognised as a universal right.
