National Volunteers Week is celebrated in many countries, and was first observed in Canada in 1943 to acknowledge the contribution of women on the home front during the war efforts. It has since been adopted by New Zealand, Australia, United States and United Kingdom, and is a chance to recognise the contributions made by all volunteers across the country, as well as encouraging others to get involved. Dates vary, but in the UK it is celebrated on 1-7 June every year.

Volunteers’ Week is supported by small organisations as well as larger, well known charities, and together they run hundreds of activities across the UK, which showcase and celebrate volunteers and their contribution to our communities. A wide variety of activities will be taking place across the country, such as volunteer recruitment events and open days to celebration and recognition events so it is a great time to gather information and think about volunteering, especially if you have never done it before.

Why volunteer?

Volunteering can benefit you physically and mentally, build confidence and provide new skills and valuable work experience. People who volunteer also feel a greater sense of connection with their communities and an enormous sense of achievement and purpose. Volunteering can provide communities with social events, experiences, or services that would otherwise not be available and that greatly enrich people's lives.

For young people, volunteering can be a fantastic opportunity to gain skills and add something valuable to their CV, and can be advantageous when applying to University or a new job.

How can I get involved?

Volunteers’ Week is an ideal time to get chatting to organisations about their volunteering opportunities. Volunteer Centres are also a really great place to start and provide a range of information and support for people who want to volunteer; for voluntary and community organisations who involve volunteers; and local businesses. They can find a role to suit you and your interests or skills if you are unsure where to start. You can find your nearest Volunteer Centre here: ncvo.org.uk/get-involved/volunteering/want-to-volunteer
