Sunshine and Sandwiches: Embracing the Joy of Outdoor Dining

As I start to type this article, on the first day of spring 2024, I realise that I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited about the change of a season before.

Winter feels like it has been a real slog this time around. I normally embrace the chance to start wearing jumpers and woolly hats, and having a cosy couple of months indoors spent in front of the TV or reading books wrapped up in a warm blanket. This year has been different though, and winter has felt like a trap; holding me hostage as I wait for the Sun to come and rescue me.

The First Days of Spring

We all know that getting outdoors is good for us, especially as the season starts to change for the brighter, but we also know that it can be really difficult to shoehorn the time into our hectic schedules. So instead of finding that extra time in the day to soak up some sunshine and breathe in the fresh air, why not take something you already do every single day, and just move that task outdoors?

I always eat three meals a day, without fail; breakfast, lunch and tea (or ‘dinner’ in other parts of the country). So, while the weather is nice, would it be so difficult to eat one of those meals outside? It doesn’t have to be every day (we know the British weather wouldn’t allow that anyway), but when time and clouds allow, it could make such a difference to your day and to your mental health.

Breakfast can be a bit hectic in my household, trying to get kids off to school and nursery, plus us adults trying our hardest to get to work on time, so this would be one outdoor meal that wouldn’t work for us on most days. On the weekend though, could we have cereal and toast in the garden? Maybe your situation is different to mine, and you have a bit more peace and quiet in the morning. If that’s the case, then kicking off your day with some fresh air and muesli might just be the tonic you need to start your day the right way.

Lunch is an easier prospect for me as I work from home, and most days I have the freedom to make my own lunch and eat it wherever I like. Maybe making the effort to eat my lunch in the garden at least once a week, with the bubbling of the fish pond and the chirping of the birds, would be a calm retreat in the middle of a hectic working day? Lunch is one of those meals that can be eaten anywhere, so why not pack up your sandwiches and head to the park, the seaside, or even a wooden bench in a busy town centre. If the aim is to spend more time outside, then this is one meal that you can really take just about anywhere.

If you’re thinking of ‘tea’ as being a hot meal, then it’s not quite as easy to pack up and take out with you, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some great options. Take the covers of the garden furniture and serve up your fajitas outside for a change; if you are one to always sit at the dining table anyway, then this won’t actually be that big of a change to your routine.

There’s nothing saying that you have to make all these meals yourself in order to eat ‘al fresco’, a beer garden is still outside! Fish and chips is another classic British meal that can be eaten just about anywhere too. We like to find somewhere with a bit of green space for the kids to run around in, but even if we’re all perching on someone’s garden wall, we’re still generating that much needed vitamin D with the help of the Sun.

However you decide to embrace the joy of outdoor dining, have fun with it and try not to treat it as a chore. Autumn will be here again before you know it, and we’ll all be digging out the warm blankets and woolly hats once more.
