Storytelling doesn’t just happen in books.

Blockbuster films are telling you a story. Soap operas are telling you a story. Storytelling happens in the theatre and in your favourite pop songs. Even recounting anecdotes to a co-worker next to the water cooler about some ridiculous thing that happened on Saturday night is a form of storytelling.

Stories are deeply routed into who we are as a people, so it’s only right that we take time to celebrate this during National Storytelling Week.

When is National Storytelling Week and how can I take part?

The next National Storytelling Week will take place from Saturday 27th January to Sunday 4th February, 2024. This is a UK based event that should not be confused with World Storytelling Day that happens on 20th March, 2024. National Storytelling Week celebrates the power of sharing stories, and the vital role they play in developing literacy, empathy and knowledge.

There might be an event happening locally to you, so check out your library’s website or local ‘What’s On’ pages to see if there’s anything happening. Schools may also be organising something themselves so that kids can get involved, so ask a teacher if they’re planning anything. You can also find some events listed on an interactive map on the Society For Storytelling website.

If there isn’t anything going on near you, then there are resources available for you to download and organise something yourself. For instance, Twinkl have a whole host of quizzes, teaching ideas, story openers and more, all aimed at children from EYFS to KS2. Words For Life also have a page full of resources aimed at families getting involved at home together.

Keep an eye on the Society For Storytelling Facebook page, as they will be sharing ideas and resources in the run up to, as well as during the week. The National Literacy Trust are also holding some free virtual events, so that you can join in from the comfort of your own home.

We are in an age where everybody wants information delivered to them in small bite size chunks, meaning we don’t allow ourselves to really stop and listen to a story as much as we used to. So make sure to use National Storytelling Week as an excuse to stop, relax, listen, and really absorb the stories you are being told.

The customised inhaler placed to my lips, lighter at the ready, a small white rock sat on fag ash on the opposite end, emptying my lungs with a big blowing out of air. Just like that, one poor decision and one wrong move and Id unknowingly signed up to be at the complete mercy of whitney and it's partner Bobby Brown for the next 15 years. Like everything in life, money is key to survival and it's only when you have none you look for the options available in order to obtain more. Before a habit Most addicts had a qualified trade and likely were in fulltime legal employment with no criminal record and definitely no aspirations to get one I was pregnant at the young age of fifteen a teen mum at sixteen, an addict by eighteen and i embarrassingly admit I've never been employed. i'm still amazed daily by the incredible ability every drug addict possesses to get the money they need in order to self medicate and ultimately function(opiate addiction is a physical dependency)we have great imaginations and can concoct the most believable and elaborate stories on the spot without notice. Drug use stops being a choice long before we realise the enormity of just what we are embroiled in .Prison, a once scary prospect has become merely an occupational hazard,a life of crime and chaos is the new normal.possessions of any value sadly pawned or stolen by fellow addicts.Loved ones avoid us.our life and liberty are no longer a given, one arrest one bad hit is all it takes..prison sentences were the only way to get 3 meals per day a warm bed, safety and much needed medication to aid my diagnosis of bpd, ptsd, anxiety and depression not forgetting a script(prescription)the governments substitute for opiate addiction preventing the awful effects of withdrawal. Unfortunately theirs no alternative or relief from crack detoxing. emotional turmoil best describes crack detoxing for me, the main symptom surprisingly is sleep. The only welcome respite and calm in my storm ...sleep
