National Grief Awareness Week 2023 takes place from 2nd December to 8th December this year. It offers us the opportunity to acknowledge, validate, and understand the profound impact that grief has on our lives. Grief can manifest in countless ways, whether the loss of a loved one, a job, a relationship, health, or a way of life, and affects us all differently.

What is National Grief Awareness Week?

Hosted by The Good Grief Trust, the aim of National Grief Awareness Week is to raise awareness of the impact of grief; to make people aware that grief needs immediate acknowledgement, and when support is not offered a bereavement could lead to mental and physical health problems. The hope is to normalise grief and get the public talking about it - to break the taboo we’ve created surrounding the subject and make grief easier to discuss, and to provide guidance of what we can say and do to help the bereaved.

This year’s theme is Better Together, and the aim is to connect with communities through shared events, to raise awareness of the services available to people struggling with grief, and to educate providers on each other’s services. Better Together café events are being hosted throughout the UK during the week, inviting support services and those bereaved to connect with each other.

How can I take part in National Grief Awareness Week?

  • Raise awareness for National Grief Awareness Week by heading to the website where you can print out a poster to put up at work, use the hashtag #bettertogether on social media, or just use word of mouth to encourage people to discuss their grief

  • Head to an event - you can check the website to see if there are any events in your area, or join one of the online webinars taking place throughout the week

  • Donate to The Good Grief Trust so they can continue to help people struggling with grief

  • A number of landmarks in the UK are set to light orange at 6pm on 8th December to support those grieving across the country, contact a local landmark in your area and ask them to join in

This year, let’s use this week to reflect on our own experiences with grief, to extend a compassionate hand to those in need, and to foster a culture of empathy and understanding. Together, let’s embrace National Grief Awareness Week and work towards a society that acknowledges, supports, and embraces the grieving process.
