The beginning of February marks the beginning of LGBT+ History Month, a month of celebration, reflection and education. Taking place annually, it is a time to honour the LGBT+ community, acknowledging the struggles, triumphs and contributions that have shaped the world we live in today.

Each year has a different theme to help showcase a different aspect of the LGBT+ community and its history. This year’s theme is Medicine, celebrating the community’s contribution to the field of Medicine and Healthcare, both historically and today.

What is LGBT+ History Month?

LGBT+ History Month takes place annually in February. It was founded in 2004 by Schools OUT UK co-chairs, Paul Patrick and Professor Emeritus Sue Sanders, with the first LBGT+ History month taking place in February 2005. It was created to claim the past, celebrate the present and create the future of LGBT+ people, whose history was hidden for so long. The aim is to promote equality and diversity for the benefit of the public.

How can I get involved in LGBT+ History Month??

  • Spread awareness and support the cause by purchasing a 2024 badge or lanyard from the website below
  • Include the hashtags #LGBTplusHM and #UnderTheScope in your social media posts, and share your story with others
  • Check the site to see if there are any events near you, or create an event of your own
  • Donate to Schools OUT to support the cause and allow LGBT+ History Month to continue for years to come
  • Check the website for resources to help spread the word, such as posters, social media banners, and resources for learning environments
  • Educate yourself and others about the past, present and future of the LGBT+ community’s contributions to Medicine

LGBT+ History Month is a time to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and envision a more inclusive future. Together, we can ensure that the journey towards equality continues, leaving a legacy of love, resilience and celebration for generations to come.
