When we talk about cancer charities, I think most people will think about Cancer Research UK or Macmillan Cancer Support, but how many of us know about Maggie’s?

The family of Melanie Crowther chose to raise money for both Cancer Research UK and Maggie’s, so we thought we would take a closer look at Maggie’s and learn what they are all about.

Who are Maggie’s and what do they do?

Commonly going under the name Maggie’s, the charity is officially registered as Maggie Keswick Jencks Cancer Caring Centres Trust, and they opened their first centre in Edinburgh in 1996.

Maggie’s is a charity that provides free cancer support and information across the UK, as well as online. They strive to offer the best possible support free to anyone with cancer, as well as their loved ones. Whether that help comes through a specialist consultant, psychologists, or even benefits advisors, Maggie’s is there for all of your needs.

To find out more about how Maggie’s could support you take a look at the ‘Our Support’ section of their website, or find one of their centres near you: maggies.org/our-centres

Where are Maggie’s based?

The first Maggie’s centre was opened in Edinburgh, Scotland, and over the next 10 years they opened four more centres across Scotland.Since then they have opened up centres all across England and Wales, in places such as Manchester, London, and Cardiff.

Maggie’s have even opened up centres in Hong Kong, Tokyo and Barcelona with further centres planned in Norway and Netherlands.

How can I support Maggie’s?

A great way to support Maggie’s, or any charity that means a lot to you, is to leave a gift in your will. Have a read of Rita’s story to hear about why she decided to leave a gift to Maggie’s in her will.

You can also choose to collect donations to a charity in memory of a loved one. If Maggie’s was a charity close to someone’s heart before they passed, then collecting donations for that charity in their memory is a great way to pay tribute to them. You can learn a bit more about how to do that right here, on funeral-notices.co.uk, by reading this article.

Maggie's has been a great help to me and my wife, all through my wife's battle with cancer, they helped us sort out finances out and were and still are there for me to talk to after my wife lost her battle with Cancer on the 18th July 2023 The Maggie's centre I use is the one in Manchester and I want to thank everybody there for helping me to try to come to terms with my wife's death
