One of the things we enjoy about hosting charitable donations here on funeral-notices.co.uk, is that we get to learn about charity organisations that we might not otherwise have come into contact with. Take the Dwarf Sports Association UK (DSA UK) for example, they are an organisation that I knew would exist in some form or another, but I have never knowingly learnt anything about them.

That is, until now!

Who are the Dwarf Sports Association UK, and what do they do?

Firstly, it is worth mentioning that the Dwarf Athletic Association of America (DAAA) was created prior to the DSA UK, in 1985. This is because in 1993, Arthur Dean and his daughter travelled to Chicago to take part in the first ever World Dwarf Games, hosted by the DAAA. This experience was so inspiring that they immediately discussed the possibility of setting up a similar athletic organisation for dwarfs in the UK, and by October that year the DSA UK was formed, albeit originally under the name Dwarf Athletics Association UK.

The mission statement for the Dwarf Sports Association UK reads:

To make regular sporting opportunity accessible and enjoyable to anyone and everyone with dwarfism in the United Kingdom, regardless of their race, colour, ethnic origin, gender, location, sporting ability or financial support.

They accomplish this by promoting and developing both recreational and competitive sport for persons living with dwarfism, as well as providing opportunities for dwarf athletes to train for and compete in the World Dwarf Games, and the Paralympic and Olympic games.

How can you support the Dwarf Sports Association UK?

One great way to show your support is to support their athletes! If you get a chance to see any of their athletes competing, or even some of DSA UK’s friendly events, then supporting those taking part is a great thing to do.

DSA UK are a registered charity, and they rely heavily on generous donations and fundraisers. Here on funeral-notices.co.uk we support families with collections in memory of a loved one, and that is an amazing way of not only supporting the charity, but also leaving a lasting legacy for the deceased. That’s what the family of Francis Henry Albert Cowen decided to do, and together they raised a brilliant £300 for Dwarf Sports Association UK.
