As the new year dawns and the holiday cheer begins to fade, January often brings a wave of the blues. The third Monday in January, this year Monday 15th, is often referred to as “Blue Monday”, apparently the most difficult day of the year. However, this is a myth, and the Samaritans have decided to start a new tradition: Brew Monday. They are encouraging people to start a conversation over a brew.

How can I take part in Brew Monday?

Host your own Brew Monday event - invite friends, family, colleagues or neighbours to join you for a brew. It could be at home, in the office, at a community space or even virtually, as long as it allows you to come together over a cuppa.

Spread the word - share information about Brew Monday with others. Encourage them to host their own gatherings or join existing ones. You can use social media, email, posters or just word of mouth to spread the message.

Make it meaningful - use the opportunity to have meaningful conversations. Check in with others, share stories, or just enjoy each other’s company. Remember that while it’s important to make conversation, it’s just as important to sit and listen to others.

Fundraise - consider using Brew Monday to help fundraise for Samaritans or another mental health charity, so they can continue to support those in need.

Attend events - look out for local Brew Monday events organised by community groups, cafes, or workplaces. Join these gatherings to meet new people and support the cause.

Your event doesn’t have to take place on Monday 15th - it can be any time that suits you. Brew Monday encourages coming together, even in a small way, to combat loneliness and promote mental well-being.
